    Easy Classroom Applesauce Recipe

I made applesauce at home last week, and it reminded me that it’s been a while since I’ve shared my favorite classroom apple recipe! This easy crockpot applesauce is a fall favorite that is perfect for an apple investigation or holiday meal. Here’s the original post from 2014, and the download with the recipe: I'm not sure when it was decided that autumn means an in-depth study of apples in every single early childhood classroom in the country, but I'm certainly not one to buck tradition. One of my favorite apple activities to do with my preschoolers is to make homemade applesauce. Children love this activity because they get to eat…

  • 4th of July Fruit Salad

I love to make fruit salad with little ones for a couple of different reasons.  First, and most obvious being that it gets them really excited about eating fruit – they get to help every step of the way and that ownership gives them the confidence to try things that they otherwise may not.  The second wonderful thing about fruit salad is that it is relatively easy to put together, you may need to cut up some of the ingredients, but other than that it is just pouring and mixing.  There is no cooking involved at all. This fruit salad is perfect for a patriotic summer event. It uses red…

  • Autumn Cooking Projects

Autumn is a great time to explore cooking in the classroom because the season naturally lends itself to so many food-related experiences. I’ve rounded up a few of my favorites, along with some great ideas from other bloggers, to give you plenty of recipes to choose from! Apple sauceMaking apple sauce is a great experience for preschoolers because they can be a part of the entire process.  Apples are soft enough that they can be easily cut with plastic knoves, and this recipe is made in the crockpot, so you can do it all in the classroom while they watch – and smell! • Preschool Science: Exploring Baking Ingredients

I have always loved baking in the classroom because it’s one of those hands on activities where children get to be involved and see changes happen right before their eyes.  When I cook in the classroom I try to be super prepared so that things go smoothly.  This doesn’t leave much time to actually explore the ingredients. If the children are extremely interested in the cooking experience I’ll make sure to give them extra opportunities to play with and manipulate the ingredients that we use.  Here are some of the ways that I introduce these to the children; Ingredient jars: I love these little containers (they’re Tupperware)! The lids are…

  • DIY: Easy Dramatic Play Cookbook

I have the easiest DIY ever for you today! I always struggle with making materials for the dramatic play area because I know how much wear and tear they are going to take, but this one is perfect, I encourage teachers to add written materials to their dramatic play areas, and cookbooks are an easy fix for any kitchen or restaurant theme. You could find cookbooks at Goodwill or garage sales, but I really love cookbooks that have plenty of pictures too, and these can be harder to find.  So for this “cookbook” I just used the recipes from the backs of boxes! There are a couple of ways that…

  • Week of the Young Child – Taco Tuesday

Happy Week of the Young Child! I thought I’d celebrate by sharing some fun ideas to help you follow along with NAEYC’s themed days. For more info about the Week of the Young Child celebration you can visit NAEYC’s website, but I’m going to jump right into the fun! Taco Tuesday is about eating healthy, and the minute that I saw Taco Tuesday on NAEYC’s list, I thought of this book: My kiddos are in love with Build a Burrito by Denise Vega (it’s out of print but I was able to find a couple of copies on Amazon).  It’s a counting book all about building the perfect burrito, with text…

  • Cooking with a solar oven

My favorite thing to do when I’m camping is to eat! There is something about camping food that is sacred – I rarely make these treats at home, and when I do they just don’t taste the same.  I love to share recipes in the classroom, but camping food is tough because the best way to cook most of these treats is over a fire, not exactly something that would be a great idea at school… but, then I came across this; This tutorial on how to build a solar oven is from Playdough to Plato and it is really easy, and her tutorial shows how kids can help put the…
