My Current Hobbies

Low cost hobbies

The cold weather has definitely kept me cooped up inside, but that doesn’t mean that I’ve been bored! I firmly believe that our hobbies make us who we are. They allow us opportunities to peek inside of ourselves and find out what makes our hearts happy. This winter there have been a few things that I’ve really enjoyed.

Baking has always been one of my favorite things to do, and cookies will always be my first love. There’s a cookie for every possible occasion, and I always make sure to have the basic ingredients on hand. Classic chocolate chip are my family’s favorite. My daughter doesn’t love cake, but has fully embraced the cookie cake, so we made one for the Super Bowl. My favorite part was the cookies from the extra dough!

I reintroduced myself to cross stitch a couple of years ago and have been struggling to find a way to organize my supplies ever since. I travel with my cross stitch often – it usually comes with me to my daughter’s skating lessons – so I needed something portable. I finally broke down and made a case that has a place for all of my little bits. Sewing the case was as much fun as using it has been. I used a couple of different images for inspiration, but I didn’t use a specific pattern. Figuring out how to fit all of the pieces together and the order that I need to piece them is fun for me, it’s that type A personality coming through.

I’ve enjoyed reading for as long as I’ve been able to do it. I was definitely that kid who always had a book. I’ve been spending a lot of time exploring new options at the library, but I also love to re-read my favorites. It’s like catching up with old friends!

My friend gifted me a sour dough starter and all of the supplies for Christmas, and she knows me well because it really has been the perfect gift. My family has a deep love for bread, and working through all of the steps to create the perfect loaf has been a fun learning experience. I’m at the point now where I have the basics down and I’ve started exploring with new recipes and inclusions. I made a cinnamon swirl loaf last week that I sure to become a regular!
