Spring Break Staycation Ideas

I am all about the staycation! It’s perfect for spring break because it doesn’t always fall at the best time to travel, and really who wants to travel with everyone else in the world. The perks of a staycation are that you don’t have to pack, you get to sleep in your own bed, and there’s no jet lag. Plus, since you’re not spending money on flights or hotels you can stretch your budget a lot farther. So how do you make a staycation really feel like a vacation, and not just laying around on your couch watching Netflix? Here are my tips.
Plan ahead. Having a specific plan in mind gives you something to look forward to, and ensures that you’ll get out of bed and go do something (although staying in bed all day could be THE plan…). Do your research and make sure that locations you want to visit will be open, buy tickets ahead of time and figure out the transportation just like you would if you’re vacationing in a new city.
Think about the kinds of things you love to do on vacation and find ways to do those same things near home. Love to lay by the beach? Check out a salt room or get a massage. Like to explore historical buildings? Chances are that your town has some of these that you can tour. Is shopping your thing? Drive to a local outlet mall.
Do the things that you never get around to doing. Is there a destination in your area that you’ve always wanted to visit? Maybe an attraction that you’ve been to, but not for a long time? Check out a restaurant you’ve always wanted to try, or make a day of doing all of your favorite local things. Explore Trip Advisor or your town’s website for new ideas.
Include friends or family members. Everything is more fun with others, so bring them along! Plan all of your activities with the same people as if you were going on a trip together, or mix things up and do something with someone new every day.
Check something off your to-do list. Every day of your staycation doesn’t have to be out and about. Do you have a closet that desperately needs cleaned out, or a garage to organize? Plan a day to focus on this task. Knowing that you have other plans throughout the week will help you get it done without procrastinating.
Some of my favorite staycation activities are:
- Brunch with friends
- Staying up late to watch favorite movies
- Driving a little farther than I usually would to shop somewhere new
- Spending a day reading
- Going to a museum
- Sleeping in
