Summer Learning Supplies for an 8 Year Old

Every year I’ve tweaked the supplies that I gather for summer learning. When my daughter was in Kindergarten we used a ton of crayons, glue, and flash cards (see how I organized all of that here), now that she’s almost done with second grade, there are so many more notebooks, pencils, and books. Here’s what we’re using to keep her on track academically this summer (all links are affiliates).
In the past I’ve printed specific worksheets for certain themes. That worked for us, but it also used a lot of ink and paper, plus I had to organize all of it. The workbooks help us focus on specific subjects, and keep everything together. This summer we’re really leaning into reading, math, and writing, and I’ve slipped each workbook into a clear sheet protector and put them all in a really cute glitter three-ring binder.
Now that my daughter is a much better writer I wanted to support that with some journaling. I found this really cute undated daily planner that has a daily notes page she can journal on, as well as a place for to-do lists and priorities. I think this will be a great way to start our day and help her feel a little more organized and on top of things.
I also put some lined paper in the three-ring binder so that she can keep track of the books she reads. This will help us manage her list for our library’s summer reading program, and give her something very tangible to see how much she’s accomplished at the end of the summer.
I’m rounding it all out with some fun writing supplies. Crayola Super Tips are perfect for both drawing and writing, plus the pastel set is so pretty! I picked out some pastel mechanical pencils to go along with these. Mechanical pencils are perfect for working on the go because we don’t have to worry about sharpening them. I put them all in a zipper pouch that snaps into a binder and we can easily pick up the binder and take it with us to work on between camp sessions or after a picnic at the park.
