Leaning into what brings me joy

Joy List

I got a little vulnerable with you on Monday – this time of year is tough. The pressure to jump back into a routine after the holidays, when I’m not really ready for that, causes some friction. Add the dreary weather and joy can be a little hard for me to come by. I’m working through it by leaning into the things that I know bring me joy – a “Joy List” if you will!

Whenever I’m feeling a little down – whether it’s because I’m burnt out at work, clouds and cold are impacting my mood, or I’m just in need of a pick me up – I like to have a list of things that I know bring me joy so that I can choose one to focus on when I really need it.

The key to success with this is making sure that there are a variety of different options on my list. From something that’ I’d consider a splurge (like a massage or mani-pedi) to something that I can do for free anytime (daydreaming about travel or walking in my favorite park). Knowing that no matter what my finances look like, how much time I have, or even what the weather forecast is, I can still find something to lift my spirits, makes such a difference.

Here’s what’s on my list right now:

  • Being near the lake (or any body of water)
  • Planning a trip
  • Losing myself in a sewing project
  • Dinner with friends
  • Sleeping in
  • A long, hot shower
  • A great cup of coffee in a fancy mug
  • Watching an old favorite movie
  • Getting a mani-pedi
  • Turning my favorite songs all the way up
  • A long drive
  • Making something for someone else
  • Baking cookies
  • Good wine
  • Organizing a cluttered space
  • A beautiful sunset
  • Getting lost in a book

My list changes as I find new things that have a serious impact on my mood. I try to add ideas whenever possible – but I also remove them if I’ve been leaning on them too much and they aren’t doing it for me anymore.

I’d love to know what’s on your list, sharing ideas is the best!
