Paper Snowflakes – Elevated!

Fine Motor Craft for Winter

It’s been COLD here, so I’ve been spending all of my time inside. For me, that always leads to crafting! My daughter wanted to cut paper snowflakes, so we got out the paper and scissors and went to town. I feel in love with a couple of my surprise designs and wanted to take them a little farther. It turned into a fun, calming project that would be great for children of any age, so of course I had to share it here.

I started with a simple paper snowflake, here’s one before opening it up – which is always the best part!

And the the dramatic reveal of what all the cuts create:

I took the finished snowflake and carefully glued it to a piece of colored cardstock. I went with winter, snowy colors – but bright rainbow colors would be a ton of fun too.

I love the contrast of the crisp, white snowflake on the colored background. Then I cut around the outside of the snowflake. You could leave a bit of a colored border, but I decided to cut right against the snowflake.

It still looked a little plain to me, so I took it a step further. I added zentangle doodles in each of the negative (colored) spaces. I used flair pens, but any fine tip marker or even gel pens would work too.

Adding all of the doodles does take a bit of time, but it was such a great mindfulness activity. I really leaned into the opportunity to calm down and just focus on my work for a bit. This was the perfect way to refocus after the holidays. Here’s what it looked like when all of the doodles were done.

I ended up making a few in different colors because I loved them so much!

Aren’t they beautiful! These would be such a great way to practice a wide variety of fine motor skills and to encourage children to really focus on their work and take their time.

I’ve got another fine motor project coming up on Wednesday, so make sure to check back here then!
