Putting yourself first

Making health a priority

It’s hard to make yourself a priority! As teachers, most of us are naturally giving. We see our role as supporting others, so the idea of saying no to someone else in order to take care of ourselves feels icky – but it doesn’t have to! I’ve truly been able to change my own perspective by remembering what we’re told in any airplane safety speech; You have to put your own oxygen mask on before you can help someone else with theirs.

This is true for taking care of yourself in other ways too! When we don’t take the time to give ourselves what we need – rest, fuel, mental space – then we can’t continue to give to others.

My favorite ways to take care of my own health include;

  • Regular walks outside
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Taking time to watch a favorite show or read a book
  • Spending time with friends often
  • Meals that make me feel strong and fueled
  • Time by myself (the introvert in me needs this!)
