Spring Break Staycation

We’re going on another Disney Cruise later this spring and we could not be more excited! Since that trip won’t fall during school’s spring break I’ve been trying to plan some things to make sure that the week off school is still fun. It’s time for a staycation, and that can be a challenge this time of year when the weather still makes it hard to spend much time outside. Here’s what I’ve got up my sleeve for this spring break staycation – and some other ideas that we’ve done in the past.

Movie Date – We love to see a movie in the theater. It’s a great way to spend a couple of hours and I never have to plan for the weather. Add some popcorn and it feels like a special event. This year Hoppers is at the top of the list for my animal-loving girl.

Holiday Celebrations – St. Patrick’s day happens to fall during spring break this year, so we’re going to go all out. We’re building leprechaun traps, making shamrock shakes, watching The Luck of the Irish on Disney+ and munching on Lucky Charms cereal treats. We’ve both got something green to wear, even if we’re the only ones who get to see our festive outfits.

Library visit – When all else fails I can always count on the library. We’ll visit at the beginning of the week to stock up on books that’ll keep us busy all week long. My daughter has really been into drawing lately, so we’ve been huge fans of how-to-draw books.

Prep for upcoming events – We’re going to spend at least one day getting organized for our cruise. My girl needs to try on all of the summer clothes from last year and decide what new things we might need to pick up before we leave. We have to round up all of the pixie dust projects we’ve been finishing, and make a list of snacks that we want for the drive.

Zoo day – I’m crossing my fingers that we’ll get at least one nice day to visit our local zoo. It’s one of our favorite places, and we usually squeeze in a trip early in the spring to enjoy the lower crowds. Thanks to our annual membership its also a trip I don’t have to plan for or pay much for at the time of the visit – and that also means my girl can usually talk me into some ice cream or a souvenir.

Longer road trip – A stretch of free days gives us a little more flexibility to take longer trips too. During fall break we drove a couple of hours to the Columbus Zoo, for spring break we’re hoping to visit the Cleveland Aquarium. We’ve also done Ikea days, state parks and museums that we don’t get to visit very often.

Favorite activities – Ice skating is something my daughter and I both love. She takes lessons weekly, but during breaks we usually try to get in more ice time that’s just fun and a lot less structured than a typical lesson.

Some other favorites – We won’t have time to get to these fun ideas this spring break week, but they’ve been hits in the past; Science museum, play dates with friends, tons of craft projects, baking, movie marathons, shopping trips, decorating for Easter, History museums, etc.

I hope our plans give you some inspiration for your own staycation!
