St. Patrick’s Day Math and Science

St. Patrick’s day is such a fun holiday to celebrate in the classroom because there are some very different opportunities for exploration than we see with other holidays. Because of this, I’ve included some science activities – which means that this is a math and science center for Preschool St. Patrick’s Day! Let’s take a look at some of these materials. Shamrock Observations – This set is designed to help children focus on small details, which is perfect when it comes to shamrocks and finding that elusive 4-leaf clover. There are images of a variety of different shamrocks, and then zoomed in images of the same shamrocks so that children…

  • Numbers for preschool math centers

    Seasonal Numbers for Math Activities

When I pulled out my valentine materials I remembered how much I love using the large number sets! I also realized that I only have a set for Valentine’s day and St. Patrick’s day – it was definitely time to change that. One of the things that makes these so valuable is that they can be used so many different ways by children learning a variety of different skills. Take a look at the valentine set: Each number has a corresponding number of hearts on it. These can be counted and covered by small objects or clothespins to build one to one correspondence and cardinality. Each number also has a…

  • Activities to do with yarn – math

If there is one thing that is universal for every single preschool program it’s that you never seem to have enough materials for all of the activities that you want to do with the children. Over the years I’ve gotten pretty good at creating fun experiences with very few supplies.  I thought it would be fun to focus on one simple supply and share a ton of easy activities that you can do to meet different learning domains. This week is going to be all about things you can do with yarn. When it comes to math, the simplest activities often make the biggest impact. There are so many ways…

  • New Math Centers!

You know when you’re really excited about something and you just can’t wait to share?! That’s me right now! I bought this adorable coffee cup clipart months ago, but it was kind of just sitting there on my computer collecting dust because I couldn’t figure out what to do with it.  Then it hit me – math centers of course. I am so in love with how these turned out and I just had to share them with you! There are three centers; colors, numbers, and shapes. The color set is simple color matching, but also includes the color words so that you can encourage vocabulary word recognition. It includes…

  • Friday Freebie – Christmas Cookie Counting

Happy Friday! I must have Christmas cookies on the brain, last week I shared a freebie and activities from the holiday cookie party I threw for my kiddos last year.  This week I have a counting activity that you can add to your Christmas cookie theme. With this Christmas Cookie Counting freebie children count the correct number of cookies onto the plate. There are two sets of plates, one with dots that correspond to the number to help children count correctly, and one set without the dots to challenge counters with higher level skills. The freebie includes numbers 1-5, if you want more practice, I’ve included the numbers 1-10 in…

  • Reggio inspired math centers

Yesterday I talked about how my classroom is ever-changing. I am constantly rotating materials in my centers, so  thought I would give some examples for different center materials.  Once I gathered a ton of materials for a particular center it was much easier to switch them out frequently. When it comes to the math center, my students especially love the following math-related materials: Scales (authentic bathroom or kitchen scales, as well as balancing scales) Calculators Abacus (I have a Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden Abacus that my students LOVE) Rulers, yardsticks, and tape measures magnet numbers I also like to add things that students can manipulate with each of these items,…
