  • Germs Germs Germs

I have to apologize for being MIA this week, my household is sick sick sick! I know that its a rough year for cold and flu, and I’m not complaining because we could have it much worse. I did want to take a quick minute to share a resource that might be helpful if you’re fighting the germs with your students.  Please take a minute to check out my hand washing visuals to help build those healthy routines!

  • Week of the Young Child – Taco Tuesday

Happy Week of the Young Child! I thought I’d celebrate by sharing some fun ideas to help you follow along with NAEYC’s themed days. For more info about the Week of the Young Child celebration you can visit NAEYC’s website, but I’m going to jump right into the fun! Taco Tuesday is about eating healthy, and the minute that I saw Taco Tuesday on NAEYC’s list, I thought of this book: My kiddos are in love with Build a Burrito by Denise Vega (it’s out of print but I was able to find a couple of copies on Amazon).  It’s a counting book all about building the perfect burrito, with text…

  • How to keep from getting sick when you’re a teacher

Yuck! There is a really nasty bug going around, I can’t tell you how many adults and kids I know who have the flue right now.  This is always my least favorite thing about spending the day with little ones, you just can’t avoid the germs.  When things get really bad there are a few strategies I turn to; Clorox wipes.  If you just can’t go around spraying everything with bleach all day, then these are the next best thing.  I love how easy they are to use, and they give me so much peace of mind.  Don’t forget to wipe down the door knobs, light switches, faucet handles, and…

  • Children’s books about hygiene

There is literally a children’s book for everything, but it’s a bit difficult that find books that talk about hygiene and do it well.  The point of reading a book about a specific topic is to encourage discussion and make the children think about the topic, many of the hygiene books are just a little too direct for my comfort, and they don’t lead the conversation in the direction that I want it to go.  With that said, I thought I should share the books that I do like so that you don’t have to read the duds! All links are affiliates. The Girl Who Wouldn’t Brush Her Hair Sugar…

  • Talking about hygiene

I am a huge fan of any opportunity to have conversations with my kiddos.  These conversations help me learn so much – they give me a better understanding of what the children know, and which areas I need to explain better.  They also give me one on one time with my kiddos, and a chance to learn a little about their lives. I created these little tags to help get my kiddos talking about hygiene habits, and to see what’s going on in their lives.  I’m going to use them for a bulletin board, after I sit down with each child I’ll write their answers on the tag, then their…

  • Fighting germs in preschool

Ugh! It’s that time of year again, you’re probably wiping every surface in the classroom with Clorox in an attempt to get rid of all of those germs.  It feels like a losing battle, they’re everywhere! I certainly don’t have a miracle solution, but I do have something that can help turn the children into your teammates in this particular war. I noticed a couple of years ago that at this point in the year, all of those hand washing rules I stressed so much at the beginning of the school year start to get a little relaxed, and since this is exactly the time of year when I need…

  • Healthy Valentine’s Day Treats

Cupcakes and cookies are wonderful things ( I love them more than I should) but nine times out of ten, young children will choose healthier snacks if given the option.  Doesn’t this bow of raspberries look so tempting?! This would be an incredibly easy Valentine’s day treat, and I guarantee that by the end of a preschool party, there might still be cupcakes on the tray, but all of these raspberries would be gone.  Children have surprising appetites, and many of them choose healthier options more willingly than adults do! Here are some other healthy treat ideas that children, parents and teachers will thank you for bringing to the party:…

  • How can we promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles for preschoolers?

Happy Week of the Young Child! Today's post is all about encouraging healthy lifestyles. If you look at your average preschooler, he or she probably has a lot of opportunities for physical activity throughout the day. He or she probably has a family that does their best to provide healthy, nutritious meals. There is more to encouraging healthy lifestyles than exercise and eating right, young children have to understand why these things are important. If we don't help them understand the principles behind living healthy, then when they are old enough to decide how to spend their time and what they want to eat, they won't value the choices that…
