Autumn Scribble Art

Easy Fall Art Project

If you’re looking for an easy, low prep, and super powerful art experience this post is for you! Scribble art is developmentally appropriate for every age and can be done with materials that you already have. To make this really fit the fall season I stuck with traditional autumn colors, but it can be done with any color scheme which makes it an experience that you can revisit multiple times throughout the year with very different results each time.

You’ll need paper, black markers or crayons, and colored markers or crayons. You can choose to have each child create their own art or use a larger sheet of paper for a group art project. Start by having the children draw a scribble with the black marker. Encourage a lot of loops and crossing of lines to create spaces that can be colored in. If you are working with young toddlers you could have them watch as you do the scribble part to model what this looks like.

Once you have your black and white scribble then it’s time to color it in. This can take some time depending on how intently the children are focused on their art, so it may be something that you come back and do another day.

The best thing about this project is how individual each one will be. Children can make loopy scribbles, or more linear ones, they can use a ton of colors and carefully color each small section or they can use the colors to scribble over their black and white scribbles. It truly is an opportunity to express themselves artistically and really flex those fine motor skills!
