Creating a Cozy Classroom

Warm Preschool Environments

The cold weather that we’ve had lately makes me want to curl up under a blanket and never move. Unfortunately that isn’t an option, so instead I’m dreaming of cozy space. While we’d all love to have a million dollars to redecorate our classrooms every season, I know that isn’t actually practical. There are some small things that you can easily do to make it as warm and comforting as possible. The links that I’m sharing below are affiliates, but I’ll also share other ways to source the same items if you’re working on a tighter budget.

Add a yarn garland like this one. Yarn is an easy choice for a cozy feel because it’s the main component in blankets, sweaters, scarves and mittens. Just having these cute tassels hanging around will make everything feel a little warmer. You could even make this one yourself! Another way to use textiles to increase comfort is with macrame wall hangings or plant holders. Since this art form is so trendy at the moment, there just might be a co-worker or family member who knows how to create exactly what you’re looking for. Make sure to use your network!

Find the right scents and some warm lighting. The way a space smells can have a powerful impact on the way it feels. Use a wax warmer (placed out of the way) to evoke baked goods and warmth. The light from a wax warmer can add it’s own coziness to a space, but if you’re looking for other lighting options then go for choices that move light and offer a golden hue, like these flameless candles. You may even be able to find a family that has some they’d like to get rid of as they clean out decorations after the holidays.

Cozy can be synonymous with soft. There are so many reasons not to add all of the pillows and blankets, that can become a cleaning nightmare. But this doesn’t mean forgoing soft textured surfaces altogether. This floor cushion has a removable cover for easy washing, and even this plush rug can be thrown in the washing machine.

Natural materials can make all the difference. These jute balls and driftwood pieces evoke the beach, and sometimes those associations truly are enough to help us feel warmer. Scatter them on shelves, place them in decorative bowls, or use them to fill large vases so that everyone can see and enjoy them all day long.

One last thing, let the children get in on the coziness too. Invite everyone to bring a pair of slippers with hard soles to wear in the classroom. This will keep wet footprints from outside to a minimum, and the hard soles will meet safety requirements. everyone will feel just a little more at home in their comfy slippers!
