    Summer in the classroom

There are so many different kinds of summer child care and preschool program situations – so it’s impossible to generalize one “right” way to do summer in the classroom. In my own personal experience, I’ve always worked for full-year, full-day childcare programs. our summers typically look exactly like the rest of the year, but summer always FEELS different. I like to embrace that and really do my best to incorporate the very best parts of summer into the classroom. For me, this has always included a little less structure and a lot more time outside. Now don’t get me wrong, we still do a ton of learning! It just feels…

    Summer Clipart!

I’ve really been into creative projects lately, and I’m taking full advantage of this while working on my summer clipart collections! I use these for my monthly planner spreads, but they would truly work for anything that you might use clipart for. I’ve also been using some of the images to update my seasonal classroom resources and it’s so fun to see my own images in these. Here’s what I’ve added to my clipart section for the next couple of months: The lemonade stand set is just sunny and happy – it doesn’t get much more “summertime” than this! There’s a bit of a party vibe and it all makes…

    Summer Plans!

This summer is going to look very different for our family – it’ll be the first summer that my girl and I will be home together all summer long. The idea of giving her a fun summer while I’m still working stresses me out a bit, so I took some time to do the one thing that always puts my mind at ease, some serious planning! If someone asked me to choose ONE word to describe myself it would definitely be the word “planner.” I truly love to organize my thoughts, lay them out on paper and fill in any missing pieces. It helps me feel in control and gives…

The weather has been beautiful and I am fully in the summer spirit. All I want to do is be outside, so I thought I’d put together a list of all the fun things that little ones could possibly do outside for those times when my “let’s go outside” is met with a chorus of “I don’t want to.” Look for bugs Follow some ants Put together wildflower bouquets Make daisy or clover necklaces Build a sandcastle Dig a deep deep hole Go to the park Pretend the playground is a pirate ship Make mud pies Start a sand bakery Find shapes in the clouds Draw your scientific observations Decorate…

  • Friday Freebie – Summer Writing Prompts

Happy Friday! I have such a great idea for you today – I did a training last week and one of the participants was sharing that she is doing summer journals with all of her students.  She thought that this would be a good way to continue the writing and language work that they started during the school year, without really feeling like they were doing “work”.  She is planning on having them take their journals along with them on all of their fun summer trips so that they can write or draw what they learned and how they felt about the experience.  These Summer Writing Prompts from Kinder Molly,…

  • Summer Fun

A couple of years ago (June of 2014 to be exact) I shared a series of posts about fun activities to break up summer boredom with your own children and your students.  You can find those posts HERE and HERE.  I thought it was time to refresh those lists and share some of my favorite easy summer activities. I am constantly reminding the teachers that I work with that children will always love the most simple ideas – we (the adults) are the ones who get bored with the same things over and over again, but children haven’t been doing these things for nearly as long as we have, so…

  • Books about the Beach

I feel like summer themed books don’t always get the attention that they deserve because there are so many things to do in the summer besides read.  There are a ton of beach books that will add new elements to your discussions about the beach.  Here are a few of my favorites (all links are Amazon affiliates): At the Beach Good Night Beach Beach House A Day at the Beach Check these out and be sure to take some time examining the pictures, which might help you add to your list of dramatic play props to add to your own beach play!
