Last Day of School Traditions

Our last day of school is tomorrow! When my daughter was in kindergarten the last day of school rolled around and I realized that I hadn’t planned for any fun traditions. For me, someone who LOVES holidays and celebrations, this was a massive problem. I quickly came up with a couple of things that work well for us and have been things my girl really looks forward to. Here are our last day of school traditions.
I try to keep mornings the same – throwing a special breakfast or activity into our well-oiled routine would throw the whole day off. My daughter’s school always does a half day for their last day, so I pick her up after lunch time with a little surprise waiting in the car. The last couple of years it’s been a stuffed friend to enjoy summer activities with, this year she’s started collecting these Disney dolls so one of them will be waiting for her. I really try to keep this cheap and easy – Five Below is my go-to for great affordable stuffed animals and toys.
Then we hit up the local ice cream store and really lean in to the sugar rush. That’s it – traditions don’t have to be complicated or expensive, they just have to be memorable! If you’re still looking for inspiration, here are some other ideas:
Before school
- Special breakfast (sprinkle pancakes, cinnamon rolls, smoothie bowls, bagels and toppings, etc.)
- Stop for donuts or a smoothie
- Wear a last day of school shirt
- Take a photo to compare with the first day of school
- Decorate bedroom doors
After school
- Go to the playground with friends
- Backpack clean-out photo session
- Special snacks (popsicles, sundae bar, fruit kabobs, etc.)
- Have a movie night
- Stay up late
- Special dinner (go out, order pizza, let the kids choose)
- Unlimited screen time afternoon
What would your kids love on the last day of school?!
