  • Creative Mother’s Day Celebrations

I’ll be honest here, Mother’s day is not my favorite holiday to celebrate with my preschoolers.  It is a highly personal holiday – each family celebrates very differently, and I don’t want any of my students to feel like their family’s celebration is not the “right” kind of celebration.  I do however love to throw a party, and I think that these kinds of events allow families to decide who is going to attend, and to help prepare their child for the event before it happens. I know that Muffins for Moms breakfasts are really popular, because the alliteration is cute and muffins are easy, but if you are thinking…

  • Practicing Conservation in Preschool

Conservation can be an abstract concept for preschoolers, they haven’t had a lot of experience with the world around them, and it can be difficult to understand why they might need to save water or electricity.  There are some things that you can work on in the classroom to help children understand conservation practices and why they are important. Save paper scraps in a basket for children to use for cutting or collage projects Turn off the lights when you leave the room, or leave the lights of during certain parts of the day and enjoy natural lighting Use dry erase boards instead of printer paper Set up recycling bins…

  • Recyclable Jewelry

Yesterday I shared some thoughts on open-ended recyclable art, and today I’ve rounded up some more ideas for those recyclable materials.  These fun projects all use recyclable materials to create jewelry, so if you love the way they turn out you could use them as Mother’s Day gifts too! Coiled magazine pendant Soda Bottle Jewelry Washer pendants Yarn wrapped bracelets Fabric and paper straw bracelet I can’t wait to try a couple of these ideas myself, I’d love to know how they work for you too!

  • Earth Day Recyclable Art

Earth day is on Saturday and I am full of ideas for exploring conservation and natural resources! Today I wanted to share an opportunity for open-ended recyclable art.  Earth day is all about re-using materials instead of throwing them away, and using recyclables as materials for art is great way to encourage children to look at common objects in new ways and flex their imaginations. It’s also a fun way to  explore three dimensional art since recyclables lend themselves to sculpture. The key to open-ended art is to make sure that the children have all of the materials that they could need, and let them use them in any way…

  • Egg Decorating without the Mess

While I love the entire egg-dying experience and welcome any sort of mess in the classroom, I can certainly appreciate that there are situations and environments where a neater approach is necessary. There are plenty of ways to decorate eggs without ruining your clothes, furniture, or carpet. Here are some great options: Draw on warm eggs with crayons Dye eggs with tissue paper and water Glue dots and glitter make beautiful polka dot eggs Decorate eggs with washi tape Offer children stickers to decorate their eggs with All of these fun ideas offer egg dying opportunities without the mess – hopefully they will save you a little time and sanity!

  • My Favorite Easter Books

It’s been a while since I’ve done a book round up, so I wanted to share some of my favorites for Easter.  The best thing about these books is that they make great classroom read-alouds and they’re perfect for adding to Easter baskets. All links are affiliates. There’s no shortage of Easter books out there, but I tend to lean towards the classics, such as: The Easter Egg by Jan Brett Rechenka’s Eggs by Patricia Polacco It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown by Charles Schulz Max’s Chocolate Chicken by Rosemary Wells Easter by Gail Gibbons The Complete Adventures of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter There Was an Old Lady Who…

  • Easter Snack – Bunny Trail Mix

Even  if you aren’t planning an Easter party, it’s always fun to add a little excitement to your day with a special snack.  I love to make snack mix with preschoolers for a couple of reasons: None of the ingredients have to be measured or cooked, just dump it all in a great big bowl and stir it up! It is really easy for families to help bring in supplies because they only have to get a bag of this or a box of that.  You aren’t asking for a ton of stuff and they don’t have to sort or seperate any of it.   The other really great thing…
